Nice textured article by John Lichfield today in the Independent reflecting on the French riots a year after their occurrence. Lichfield deals well with the complexity of the issues involved. In particular, he argues (convincingly, in my opinion) that the riots were not actually race-based as many claimed, but rather that those involved were united by their lack of opportunity and poor living conditions.
